Paine's family settled in Springfield in 1835. He learned the bookbinding trade and entered the business, establishing his own bindery in 1860. In 1843, Paine married Emily Shultz, with whom he raised seven children. During the Civil War, Paine manufactured rifle cartridges for the U.S. government.
