Pendleton, John S.

John S. Pendleton was admitted to the bar in 1824 and practiced law in Culpeper County, Virginia. He served in the Virginia General Assembly from 1830 to 1833 and again from 1836 to 1839. Pendleton was appointed minister to Chile from 1841-44 before winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Whig from 1845 to 1848. Pendleton was called to diplomatic service again in 1851, acting as a minister to Argentina until 1854 and as co-minister to Brazil with Robert C. Schenck in 1852.
