Born in Green County, Ohio, Allen W. Phares was a farmer, store owner, lumber and grain merchant, and livestock dealer. In September 1833, he married Parmelia Williard, with whom he had at least seven children. He relocated to Clinton, Illinois in 1849, where he owned and operated a large dry goods and general store and dealt in lumber and grain. By 1850, he owned $3,500 in real estate. In 1854, he sold his store to Henry Magill, then invested himself fully in his lumber and grain business. In 1857, he sold this business and moved to Galesburg, where he devoted himself to raising livestock and farming.
