Lorenzo D. Plant was a farmer, hotelier, merchant, and early settler of Bond County, Illinois. In 1831, Plant purchased 147 acres of public land southwest of Greenville near Pocahontas, and he acquired an additional eighty acres in 1836. In November 1834, he married Mariah Ives. In 1840, Plant constructed a house in Greenville to serve as a hotel, but the business was short-lived. He also established a mercantile establishment in Greenville in partnership with his son Williamson Plant. In 1850, Plant owned real property valued at $3,100. In 1854, he was among the first trustees of Amity Academy, a school established in Pocahontas. By 1860, Plant was farming and owned real property valued at $3,000 and a personal estate of $700.
