Rape grew up in Tennessee and during the War of 1812, he served in a Tennessee regiment. He married there and in 1826, he moved his family to Sangamon County, Illinois. John and his wife Polly had seven children before her death in 1838, and the following year, he remarried to Elizabeth Snodgrass, with whom he had seven children. Rape was a farmer, and in 1850 he owned $6,400 worth of real estate.
