Rathbone likely lived in Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1837 and 1838. In 1843, he married Mary Ann Drain and they settled in McLean County, Illinois, where Rathbone and his father-in-law were farmers. In 1851, he married Helen Fordyce. By 1860, Rathbone was no longer married to Helen, and he had relocated his family to Linn County, Kansas Territory, where he worked as a carpenter.
