Guy Richards was a law student, seaman, businessman, and Presbyterian. He attended Yale College, studied law after graduation, but then gave up law to pursue a career at sea. In 1820, he became a businessman in New York City, an occupation he pursued with success until his death. He married Mary Ivers in January 1822. After her death, he married her sister, Bouquet Ivers, in March 1848. By 1860, he had amassed a personal estate valued at $50,000 and owned another $15,000 in real estate. He died without any children.
