A son of Nicholas H. Ridgely, Redick (Reddick) moved with his family to Springfield, Illinois, in 1835. He had an early career as a public servant in Springfield, serving as city treasurer and as a member of the city council and the county board of supervisors. In 1850, he married Margaret Aitken, with whom he raised three children. He served as a quartermaster during the Civil War.
