Roberts moved to Illinois in 1833. He lived in Schuyler County for two years and then settled in Adams County. From 1846 to 1847, Roberts served as a captain in Edward D. Baker's regiment of Illinois volunteers fighting in the Mexican-American War. When he returned, he married Esther L. Willard, and they settled in Adams County, where Roberts was a farmer. They had four children and were members of the Brethren Church.
