Roberts came to Iroquois County in 1834, and settled in Ash Grove. He was the first justice of the peace in Ash Grove. Roberts, a Whig, served alongside Abraham Lincoln in the Illinois House of Representatives for one term, 1838 to 1840, representing Iroquois County.
