In January 1834, Ruby married Mary Shepherd in Knox County, Indiana. By 1840, he had moved his family to Lawrence County, Illinois, but by 1842, they had relocated to Sangamon County, where Ruby and his eldest son were employed as carpenters. By 1860, Ruby and his family lived in Macon County, where he farmed alongside two of his grown sons. At that time, he owned $8,000 worth of real estate. Sometime between 1860 and 1863, Mary Spear died, and Ruby re-married to Phelina T. Hatch in December 1863. He later moved to Mt. Vernon, Missouri.
