In 1821, Sampson married Hannah Smack in Madison County, Illinois. He settled in the Indian Creek area of Sangamon County (later Menard County) in 1826 or 1827 and remained a resident of that precinct until his death. In 1850, William Sampson was a farmer living in Menard County, Illinois, with his wife and six children. He owned $3,000 in real property. In 1860, Sampson owned real estate valued at $7,000 and had a personal estate of $2,000.
