Brother-in-law of Thomas Arnold, Sewell came to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1826-27, settling in a portion of the county that would be subsumed into Menard County. He would continue to farm in the area up to the Civil War. In 1860, he owned real estate valued at $4,275 and had a personal estate of $290.
