In 1839, Shinn married Dianna Wright in Fulton County, Illinois. They lived in Fulton County until at least 1850, when Job worked as a bookkeeper in Canton and owned $1,800 worth of real estate. By 1860, they had relocated to Toulon, Illinois, where Shinn was employed as a merchant. By that time, he had accumulated $5,000 worth of real estate and $4,000 worth of personal property.
