John B. Shaw was a journalist, lawyer, and mayor. He graduated from Illinois College in 1846. In 1847, he owned and edited the Morgan Journal, leaving the Whig newspaper in October 1847. Shaw moved to Cass County, Illinois sometime before 1848 and was one of the organizers of the public education system. He served as superintendent of schools from 1849 to 1857. In 1855, he was elected mayor of Beardstown, Illinois, a position he held until 1859. He later moved to Galveston, Texas to practice law.
