Shepperd, Augustine H.

Shepperd completed preparatory studies and studied law. He earned admittance to the bar and started a practice in Surry County, North Carolina. He served as a member of the North Carolina House of Commons, from 1822 to 1826. He won election, as a Jacksonian, to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1827 to 1832. Shepperd won reelection, as an Anti-Jacksonian, serving from 1833-36. He won reelection again, as a Whig, serving from 1837-39. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1838. However, Shepperd returned to Congress in 1841, serving one term until 1843, and was reelected again in 1847, serving until 1851. He declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1850 and returned to his law practice.
