Henry Smith was a farmer and postmaster in Sangamon County, Illinois. In September 1842, Smith married Sarah (Sally) M. Cartwright, daughter of the Reverend Peter Cartwright, with whom he had ten children. From May 1843 to April 1849, Smith served as postmaster of Pleasant Plains. In 1850, he was farming and owned real property valued at $1,800. From April to June 1853, Smith served another stint as postmaster of Pleasant Plains. In 1860, Smith was a farmer living near Pleasant Plains with his family. He owned real estate worth $8,000 and personal property worth $1,500.
