Spencer moved to Rock Island County, Illinois, sometime before 1832, when he served alongside Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk War. Spencer remained in the county until at least 1836 when he married Martha Hendley. By 1840, he was living in Scott County, Iowa. In 1860, Spencer was working as a merchant, and owned $800 in real estate. By 1870, he had returned to Rock Island County.
