Stevenson was a farmer. In 1829, he moved with his father and brothers from Kentucky to Illinois, settling in Cass County. Stevenson was married three times: to Hannah Rebecca Bergen in 1846, to Elizabeth F. Martin in 1852, and to Elizabeth Lucky in 1855.
