Stevens came to Illinois with his father in 1818, and settled northwest of Decatur. He and his wife were founding members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1829. His first wife was a Manville and his second was Polly Gray. Buel had ten children. His first son, Leonard Stevens Jr., was the first child born to settlers in Macon County.
