Henry V. Sullivan published the first issue of the Quincy Whig on May 5, 1838, and became co-owner with S. M. Bartlett that same year. He married Adelaide (Adalaide, Adelidi) E. Hayes on June 25, 1844, in Morgan County, and the couple had six children. In 1850, Sullivan and his family were living in Quincy's North Ward, and he owned $3,500 in real property. He served District Twenty-Nine, Adams County, in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1855. Continuing his publishing career, Sullivan published the Republican in 1857. The newspaper retained that title for a year or two before combining with the Whig and becoming the Whig & Republican. By 1860, the family was living in Quincy's Second Ward, and Sullivan owned $25,000 in real property, with a personal estate valued at $5,000. Sullivan served in the Civil War as a major and paymaster for the United States Volunteers.
