Henry V. Sullivan published the first issue of the Quincy Whig on May 5, 1838, and became co-owner with S. M. Bartlett that same year. He married Adelaide (Adalaide, Adelidi) E. Hayes on June 25, 1844, in Morgan County, and the couple had six children. In 1850, Sullivan and his family were living in Quincy's North Ward, and he owned $3,500 in real property.
