A son of Campbellite Christian minister Theophilus Sweet, Levi moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, with his parents and siblings in 1826. He married Lucy Colburn in 1832, and they initially settled in Sangamon County. They had five children before moving to Texas in 1853. Sweet was a preacher in the Christian Church and was active both in Illinois and in Texas.
