Torrey graduated from Dartmouth in 1827 and from Bowdoin College Medical School in 1830. He married Eliza S. Cabot on September 12, 1844, in Whiteside County, Illinois. He practiced medicine in Keene, New Hampshire from 1830-32, in Windsor, Vermont, from 1832-50, and in Detroit, Michigan from 1850-61. In 1861, he moved to Washington, DC, where he was a clerk in the U.S. Treasury Department.
