In March 1836, Watson married Adaline Thomas in Morgan County, Illinois. The couple moved to Sangamon County, where Abner worked as a miller until he became constable in the 1850s. A Whig and later Republican, he moved within Abraham Lincoln's circle in Springfield. In 1860, he lived with his wife and one child. Together, they owned $1,000 in real estate and $250 in personal property.
