Williamson and his family emigrated from Kentucky to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling in an area that would be subsumed into Menard County. After a short time, Williamson moved to Knox County, Illinois, purchasing land southeast of Knoxville. In 1850, he was working as a wheelwright and owned real estate valued at $1,500.
