In 1819, Woods immigrated to America with his father and brother, and they initially settled in St. Louis. In 1833, George Woods married Lucinda Stipp in Illinois, and they settled in Springfield. Woods was a tailor and ran and clothing store in Springfield. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and in the 1840s, he was active in the Sangamon County Whig Party.
