Binghamton is located sixty-five miles south of Syracuse in southern New York and is at the confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers. The first permanent settlement by Euro-Americans occurred in 1787. Binghamton was incorporated in 1813, enlarged by charter in 1834, and incorporated as a city in 1867. The locale was originally called Chenango Point, but was renamed in honor of landowner William Bingham, the owner of the tract upon which the village was located, and who donated land to the municipality. The city connected to the Erie Canal via the Chenango Canal. Binghamton serves as the county seat of Broome County.
