Hancock County is a county in the state of Indiana. Located in central Indiana, slightly east of the geographical center of the state, Hancock County is bordered on the west by Marion and Hamilton counties, on the east by Henry and Rush counties, on the north by Madison and Hamilton counties, and on the south by Shelby, Rush and Henry counties. In December 1827, the Indiana General Assembly carved Hancock County out of Madison County. Named after John Hancock of American Revolution fame, Hancock County was officially established in March 1828. Greenfield became the county seat.
