Founded in 1609, Santa Fe is located approximately forty miles west of Las Vegas. During the Mexican War, American forces under General Stephen W. Kearny occupied the city. Santa Fe became the capital of New Mexico Territory in 1851, and is the oldest capital in the United States. During the Civil War, the Confederate Army captured and occupied Santa Fe for a short time.
