The Illinois legislature created DeKalb County in 1837, from Kane County. Later that year, Kane County residents voted to approve the creation of DeKalb County. Commissioners appointed for the purpose located the new county's seat at Orange. In 1839, county residents voted against removing the seat from Orange, and renamed the town Sycamore. Sycamore survived another similar vote in 1840, and remained the county seat through and after the Civil War.
