The Illinois General Assembly created Montgomery County out of Bond County in 1821. Commissioners chose a site they called "Hamilton," about three miles southwest of present-day Hillsboro, for the county seat. After conflicts arose over acquisition of the privately owned land, in 1823 the General Assembly appointed a new commission, which located the county seat on the present site of Hillsboro, where it has remained.
