"The Island Grove" was a large woodland that emerged abruptly from the prairie in western Sangamon County and extended northeast along one branch of Spring Creek for approximately eight miles. Off the southern tip of this grove, approximately three miles west of present-day New Berlin, the settlement of Island Grove was established.
