A tributary of the Sangamon River, Spring Creek rises near the eastern boundary of Morgan County and flows through western Sangamon County before emptying into the Sangamon River north of Springfield. In 1821, Springfield, designated as the county seat of Sangamon County, was known as "Spring Creek." By 1832, the term "Spring Creek" was used to denote a settlement area, likely to the west between Springfield and Island Grove.
