The Indiana General Assembly created Parke County on April 2, 1821. Situated in west central Indiana close to the state's border with Illinois, the county was named in honor of Benjamin Parke, the Indiana Territory's first congressman. In 1824, the Indiana General Assembly approved Rockville as the county seat.
