The town of Great Barrington in western Massachusetts is located on the Housatonic River, eighteen miles south of Pittsfield. The town was incorporated in 1761. By 1860 there were 3,871 residents in Great Barrington. Within months of the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 the town had raised and outfitted a volunteer military company, which formed a portion of Company A of the Tenth Massachusetts Regiment.
