1Abraham Lincoln wrote the text of this bill as well as its title on the back page.
On February 13, 1837, William McMurtry from the Committee on the Militia introduced in the House of Representatives HB 281, which was written by Abraham Lincoln. On February 20, the House passed the bill without amendment, and referred it to the Senate. On March 2, following the addition of amendments by a select committee, the Senate passed the amended bill. That same day, the House concurred in the Senate amendments. The Council of Revision then approved the bill, and the act became law.

2The final bill as passed included McDonough County as well.
3The 1831 Act appropriated $200 to Knox County for a bridge across Spoon River and $150 to McDonough County for a bridge across Crooked Creek. The Act stipulated that the county commissioners courts were to choose the bridge sites and control construction. Upon completion of the bridges, each county’s commissioners court was required to certify as such to the Auditor of Public Accounts, who at that point would release to them the the amounts appropriated to their counties.
