W. A. Henderson1This letter is signed “W. A. Henderson.” However, the editors believe this letter
is actually from William H. Henderson, who wrote Abraham Lincoln two letters about
the General Land Office Affair earlier in May 1849.
2Cyrus Edwards, Justin H. Butterfield, and James L. D. Morrison were vying to replace Richard M. Young as commissioner of the U.S. General Land Office. Lincoln eventually became a candidate for the position as well. Earlier in May 1849,
Henderson and Josiah M. Lucas both urged Lincoln to go to Washington, DC as soon as possible to attempt to secure the job. Ultimately, neither Morrison,
Edwards, nor Lincoln received the appointment; the job went to Butterfield instead.
