Sheriffs to pay taxes into county treasuries
Receipt to be filed.
Sec.[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly, That the several sheriffs in this State shall, on the first Mondays of December and March, annually pay into the county treasuries all the taxes that may have been collected and taking the treasurer’s receipt for the same; and a certified copy of receipt[s] shall be filed by such sheriff, with the clerk of the county commissioners’ court.

Sheriffs to make final settlement at June term.
Sec. 2. All sheriffs shall make a final settlement with the county commissioners court, at the June term of said court, in each year, by paying into the county treasury the whole amount of taxes due the county from any such sheriff, taking the treasurer’s receipt for the same, and a copy of said receipt, with an account current, shall be filed with the clerk of the county commissioners court, which receipt and account current shall be entered on the records of said court; any law to the contrary notwithstanding.
Sec. 3. The nineteenth section of the act to provide for raising a revenue, approved February 19th, 1827 be, and the same is hereby repealed.2
This shall take effect from and after its passage.3

This bill having been laid before the council of revision, and ten days not having intervened before the adjournment of the General Assembly, and the said bill not having been returned with the objections of the council on the first day of the present session of the General Assembly, the same has become a law.

1Archibald Williams introduced SB 6, originally titled “A Bill for the Relief of the Sheriff of Adams County,” in the Senate on December 12, 1835. On December 16, the Senate referred the bill to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on December 17 with an amendment, in which the Senate concurred. The Senate passed the bill as amended on December 18. The Senate amended the title by striking out the words “sheriff of Adams County,” and inserting in lieu thereof the words “sheriffs therein named.” On December 30, the House of Representatives referred the bill to a select committee. On January 1, 1836, the select committee reported back the bill with an amendment. The House tabled the bill and proposed amendment. On January 4, the House resumed consideration of the bill, referring it to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on January 6 with an amendment, in which the House concurred. The House passed the bill as amended on January 9. The House amended the title so as to read “A Bill Supplementary to ‘An Act to Amend an Act to Provide for Raising A Revenue, Approved February 19, 1827.’” The Senate concurred with the House amendments and amended title on January 16. The Senate and House having laid the bill before the Council of Revision, and ten days not having intervened before the adjournment of the second session of the Ninth General Assembly, and the Council not having returned the bill with objections on December 5, the first day of the Tenth General Assembly, the act became law.
