Sect.[Section] 1 Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois represented in the general assembly That there be and there is hereby the sum of dollars appropriated by the state for the purpose of constructing a bridge across the east fork of shoal creek where the road leading from vandalia to hillsboro crosses the same in Montgomery county
Sect. 2 Be it further enacted that Richard Bradley Newton Cockrel and Fountan Whitledge be appointed commissioners whose duty it shall be to meet or a majority of them it is herein provided that in all cases a majority of the commissioners herein named shall have power to transact any business confered on them by this act theay shall meet at the house of Newton Cockrill on the first day of March next or so soon as practicable there after and adopt a plan for the construction of the bridge provided for in the first section of this bill it shall be the duty of said commisioners when a plan is so adopted by them to make out in writeing every particular item and that shall be considered a sufficient voucher on the part of the parties herein provided
Sect. 3 it shall moreover be the duty of said commissioners to make known at least three weeks previous to [?] by causeing advertisements to be posted up in the town of hillsboro and three or more of the most publick places in the county that they will meet on some day set by them at the place where the bridge herein provided is to be built and after selecting as thought by them the most eligible spot for said bridge to be built upon they shall proceed to let by contract the building of said bridge to the lowest responsible bider with an understanding that the work is to be commenced immediately and continued so as to be compleated on or before the twentieth day of november next
Sect. 4 so soon as the above mentioned work is compleated it shall be the duty of the undertaker to cause information to be given to the commissioners whereupon they shall immediatly or within three days thereafter meet at the said bridge and after examining said work it being satisfactorily done they shall issue a

certificate under their hands stateing the same with the amount so contracted by them whereupon the presentment of such certificate to the auditor of publick accounts he shall issue his warrant on the treasurer who will be required to pay the amount of such certificate out of any monies in the treasury not otherwise appropriated.
Sect. 5 This act to be in force from and after its passage

1On January 7, 1837, Easton Whitten presented a petition to the House of Representatives from citizens of Montgomery County requesting a bridge across the East Fork or Shoal Creek, and the House referred it to a select committee. The committee reported back on February 14, Whitten introduced HB 293, and the House referred the bill to another select committee. The committee reported back the bill with an amendment on February 22 and the House tabled the bill.
