Company may increase the quantity and hold estate
Sec.[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly2, That the Illinois Exporting Company may increase the quantity of real estate, authorized to be held by said company in the first section of their charter, not exceeding one quarter section;3 and may hold, also, such lands, tenements, and heriditaments as shall have been bona fide mortgaged to it by way of security, or conveyed to it in satisfaction of debts previously contracted in the course of its business, or purchased upon judgments, which shall have been obtained for such debts, for a term not exceeding three years from the time of acquiring such title.
Sec. 2. This act to be in force from and after its passage.

1On January 10, 1837, Cyrus Edwards introduced SB 68, originally titled “A Bill to Amend ‘An Act to Incorporate the Alton and Wabash Railroad Company,’” in the Senate. On January 13, the Senate referred the bill to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on January 14 with an amendment, in which the Senate concurred. The Senate passed the bill as amended. On January 25, the House of Representatives referred the bill to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on February 23 with an amendment, in which the House concurred. On February 24, the House passed the bill as amended, amending the title so as to read “A Bill to Amend An Act Incorporating the Illinois Exporting Company.” On February 28, the Senate tabled the bill and House amendments. On March 2, the Senate took up and concurred with the House amendments and amended title. On March 4,Council of Revision approved the bill, and the act became law.

2On February 23, 1837, the House of Representatives apparently amended the bill by striking out all related to the Alton and Wabash Railroad and replacing it with text related to the Illinois Exporting Company.
