Resolved, That a select committee of seven be appointed to enquire whether under the Constitution and laws of this State, a law could be passed, authorizing an appropriation out of the State Treasury to indemnify the county of Fayette, for the charges and expenses of keeping the State prisoner, Antony Gikoski in the jail of Clinton county, and that said committee report by bill or otherwise[.]
1William F. Elkin introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives on January 7, 1840, and the House adopted it. In response, the House appointed a seven-person select committee that included Abraham Lincoln.
