Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring, That a joint committee of two on the part of the House, and one on the part of the Senate, be appointed to invite the Rev. the Clergy of Springfield to officiate alternately, in accordance with any arrangement which they may enter
into among themselves, to open the daily sessions of the two Houses during the present session by prayer to the Almighty God.
1Newton Cloud introduced this resolution in the House of Representatives on December 21, 1839, and the House rejected it. On December 23 the House, on the
motion of Abraham Lincoln, re-considered this action. The House adopted the resolution by a vote of 50 yeas
to 37 nays, with Lincoln voting yea. The House appointed Lincoln and Louis Roberts as House representatives on the joint committee. On December 28, the Senate tabled the resolution until July 4, 1841.
