In March 1840, Springfield, Illinois merchant Seth M. Tinsley formed a partnership with Edmond Taylor and William Cowgill under the firm name of S. M. Tinsley & Co. The firm operated under the same name with a variety of partners over the next years, becoming one of the leading mercantile firms in Springfield.
