Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, Lavie Aborn was a farmer, merchant, public servant, tanner, businessman, engineer, and a Republican. He participated in the Dorr Rebellion in Rhode Island before relocating in the early 1840s to Mount Carmel, Illinois , where he then worked as a merchant in the firm Bishop & Aborn. At one point, voters elected him town trustee, and he later owned a brick tannery on East Fifth Street. He was one of Wabash County's delegates to the 1856 Illinois Anti-Nebraska Convention. Between 1858 and 1861, he was a member of the engineer corps for the Illinois Southern Railroad. In August 1864, he married Hannah L. Hill. The couple eventually had at least four children together. He died near Maud in Wabash County after suffering an illness for five months.
