Bates, Nathaniel S.

Nathaniel S. Bates was a stagecoach agent and city marshal of Springfield, Illinois. He first arrived in Springfield in December 1848. Bates opened a stage agent office in the Springfield City Hotel. In February 1850, he served as one of the managers of the Washington Birthday Ball at the American House. In April 1851, he ran unsuccessfully as the Whig Party candidate for Springfield city marshal. Bates received the Whig nomination again in 1852, and he won election by a majority of 246 votes. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1853 and a candidate again in 1854.
