Hiram M. Barney was a merchant and longtime postmaster of Brimfield, Illinois. Barney left his native state for Rhode Island, settling in Pawtucket. In December 1830, he married Elizabeth Smith. Barney and his family moved to Illinois, settling in Peoria County. Barney served as postmaster of Brimfield from April, 1847 to January 1850, and from February 1850 to June 1855. In 1850, Barney was employed as a merchant and owned real estate valued at $1,100. In 1860, he owned real estate valued at $14,000 and had a personal estate of $1,000.
