Boyce married Eliza Jane Potter in Vermilion County, Illinois, in 1833. From at least 1840 to 1850, Potter was a carpenter in Springfield, Illinois, where he lived with his wife and children. In 1856, he was appointed postmaster at Danville, Illinois. Boyce was a member of the Methodist Church.
