John Bovey was a farmer and landowner in Ogle County, Illinois. In June 1838, Bovey married Mary Funk in Washington County, Maryland. The couple would have at least three children. In 1845 and 1846, he purchased approximately 233 acres of public land north and northeast of Grand Detour in the Pine Creek and Oregon townships. In 1850, Bovey was farming in Pine Creek and owned real property valued at $2,550. By 1860, the value of his real property had increased to $7,000, and he had a personal estate of $1,500.
