Brewer, Anson L.

Anson L. Brewer was an attorney, town official, state senator, and paymaster in the Union Army. He spent his early life in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, the place of his birth. Brewer moved from his native Massachusetts to New Lisbon, Ohio, where he commenced the practice of law in 1826. From 1829 to 1830, Brewer was village recorder/clerk. In December 1834, he married Harriett C. Dunbar. Brewer married a second time in July 1837, when he wed Sarah Ann Endley, with whom he would have five children. In 1850, he was practicing law and owned real property valued at $13,000. Brewer was president of the Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company from 1852 to 1864. In 1860, he owned real property valued at $12,000 and had a personal estate of $1,000. From 1860 to 1861, he represented Columbiana County in the Ohio Senate. During the Civil War, Brewer served as a paymaster in the U.S. volunteers with the rank of major. He died in a steamboat accident on the Mississippi River.
