Condell immigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1824. In 1833, he and his younger brother John moved west from Philadelphia and settled in Carrollton, Illinois, where they became merchants. In 1835, Thomas married Elizabeth H. Bledsoe, and together they had five children. In 1841, Condell and his family moved to Springfield, where they established the mercantile firm Condell, Jones & Co., which operated over twenty years. Condell served as president of the Springfield Marine and Fire Insurance Company Bank from 1854 to 1868. Politically, Condell was a Republican. He was also a member of the Christian Church.
